On Friday the 25th of September, the IsZEB, in collaboration with CERTH/ITI, successfully hosted the webinar «A new Digital Era for the Construction Sector in Greece through BIM Technologies», under the auspices of the Technical Chamber of Greece, Section of Central Macedonia (TCG/SCM). The event, had a special focus on the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, and aimed to inform the participating companies and individual experts of the wider Greek construction industry about the BIM technology itself, as well as the advantages and benefits of using it through real-case applications. Experts, industry professionals, academics and representatives of legislative and institutional bodies provided valuable insights to the audience in order to strengthen and digitize the construction industry.

The Sessions In Detail

The webinar started with the «BIM Design Hub» company, which presented valuable information about BIM in general, Digitalisation, Standards and Implementation. Throughout the second session, which was dedicated to the current situation in EU and Greece, representatives from the European Commission, the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) and the EUBIM Task Group, presented legislations, aspirations and incentives provided, regarding actions and initiatives for the digitization of the construction Industry.

The third part of the event, was dedicated to distinguished Greek companies of the AEC industry, which presented practical applications and examples of projects that successfully integrated BIM solutions. Civil engineers and architects presented two (2) real cases of BIM usage in Greece, whereas a representative from the Consolidated Contractors Company, presented a project case study for BIM implementation in ABU Dhabi, UAE.

At the final part, the audience had the opportunity to get informed about new tools and practices emerged from research activities, aiming to further develop BIM technologies. BIM combined with Digital Twins can lead to Complete Monitoring and Control in real-time (presentation from the EB/Architects), whereas BIM combined with Augmented Reality (AR) solutions open new paths for new renovation Services (BIMMER project from CERTH/ITI). Also, representatives from the DigiPlace project presented the Development of a Platform of a new digital services ecosystem. IsZEB closed the webinar, with a presentation about its profile and the services it offer to the wider construction sector.

Between the sessions, participants had the opportunity to express their thoughts, participate in polls and listen to fruitful discussions between the speakers. Overall, more than 500 people from all over Greece connected and attended the various sessions.

Some interesting facts extracted from the Polls:

• 50% of the participants was Mechanical Engineers/Freelancers, 17% Academics and 17% Construction companies
• 42% of the participants, were aware of BIM technologies, although they have never received any training nor have ever used it. 25% of the participants were aware of BIM technologies and have been trained. 21% wasn’t aware of BIM and only 8% was aware and was using BIM
• The majority (44%) believes that the biggest barrier in using BIM is the absence of training
• The majority (46%) believes that in order to adopt BIM technologies in Greece, the government should support the uptake of BIM standards
• The majority (82%) would adopt BIM technologies within the next 2 years
• Concerning the possible benefits of BIM for the Greek construction industry, 34% of the participants believe that the most important benefit is the improved coordination and control of conflicts, whereas 25% believe that it is the reduced costs and risks
